Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island is one of the best kept secrets on the East Coast, as far as fluke fishing is concerned. It never gets the recognition that many areas do; yet, Narragansett Bay produces some very big fluke every season.
The season in Narragansett Bay usually begins in May, believe it or not. That is when the are the biggest and many fluke of double-digit size are caught. Aboard the White Ghost-2 we offer springtime fluke trips in combination with striper trips, or if our clients prefer, just a day of Rhode Island fluking.
In Rhode Island for 2011, whether you are fishing farther south in Block Island Sound or inside Narragansett Bay, the fluke regulations will be the following: a fluke of 18-1/2 inches in length with a bag limit of seven (7) fish per angler. Rhode Island did not over-fish its quota of fluke last season so our regulations have been liberalized. This makes visiting Rhode Island and Narragansett Bay a great destination for those interested in catching fluke and eating them.
Block Island Sound: Fluke Fishing
Rhode Island’s Block Island Sound, extends for miles to the East and to the West with many superb areas to fish for fluke. We fish just outside of Narragansett Bay from the Newport shoreline on over the Point Judith in Narragansett. Our fluke charters in this area have been very successful and with the new fluke regulations for the 2011 season, fluke fishing in both Block Island Sound as well as Narragansett Bay should be even more productive.
Scup/Black Sea Bass/Tautog:
All three species are now quite plentiful inside Narragansett Bay at some point during the season. We do trips for all of these species of fish, and this year will be providing free of charge a small booklet on how to prepare and cook your catch from the waters of Narragansett Bay.
Fishing for fluke, scup and black sea bass this year is as good as it gets. The numbers and sizes have been amazing to say the least. Most of our fish are coming off of rock piles that we have found, (all un-charted) with our new HDS-10 Lowrance Side Scanning Sonar Unit. And yes, even the fluke are coming from these areas. We haven't fished the sand or mud all season long and just went over 200 fluke for the season thus far. All taken off of rock!!!!
The sea bass fishing is just amazing as well. Lots of them and many are BIG. Our largest so far is just over six pounds, and we are catching these inside the bay, not on the outside. They are close by, no time running, more time fishing, and the areas are loaded with them. if you are into these types of bottom species then now is the time to come and get them. It isn't going to get much better than it is now.
